ABOUT FARNHAM
The tranquil market town of Farnham sits on the A31 linking Winchester, Guildford and Alton with a population of just 39,000 close to the border of Hampshire. Farnham is primarily a market town with many independent shops many dating back to the nineteenth century, Once a month Farnham holds a farmers’ market where products from local farms in and around Farnham are sold, As well as the Farnham malting’s a monthly market for bric-a-brac, antiques, arts and crafts, Farnham also acts as a tourist base for Winchester.
Based on tools and prehistoric animal bones found in Farnham it is thought that the history of Farnham dates back tens of thousands of years clusters of pit-dwellings and evidence of flint-knapping was found just to the east, Farnham continued to grow into the bronze age with two bronze hordes discovered on Crooksbury hill, During the period of roman occupation Farnham became a centre for pottery due to its massive supply of gault clay, oak woodlands for fuel and good communication routes via the harrows way with kilns being found dating back to AD 100.
The Farnham castle was built by the grandson of William the conqueror henry de Blois around 1138 to provide accommodation for the bishop of Winchester on his journey between London and Winchester, In 1348 a third of Farnham’s population was killed by the black death killing around 1300 people. In the seventeenth century the author Daniel Defoe wrote that Farnham had become one of the greatest corn-markets in the country after London and describes 1,100 fully laden carts delivering to the town on a market day.
