Epsom is located 13 miles from London, and lies in the north east of Surrey and has a population of around 31,00o people.
Little is known about Epsom until the discovery of Magnesium Sulphate in 1620, which became known as “Epsom salts” This led to a population explosion with people living in and visiting the area to take in the famous water, which led to Epsom becoming a spa town.
The popularity of the spa decreased in 1725, however by that time many large homes had been built in Epsom by affluent people, who enjoyed Epsoms close proximity to London.
During the spa period, racing on the Epsom downs became a very popular pastime. In the 1780s The famous Derby was created and quickly became the most famous horse racing fixture in the world, drawing massive international crowds.
During the 19th and 20th century a large number of mental hospitals were built in Epsom, most of these have been demolished to make way for modern day developments. Many old buildings in evaded demolition and Epsom now has more Georgian and Queen Anne style houses than anywhere else in Surrey.
Over the Years Epsom has been home to a number of famous people including:
- Julia Ormond – Emmy award winning actress
- Thomas Mayr-Arting – Former Ambassador to the EU
- Warick Davis – Actor
- Jimmy Page – Guitarist for Led Zeppelin
