To the far west of the county of Surrey is the town of Camberley, between the M3 and M4 motorways. Camberley has a population around 38,000 (2011).

The land of Camberley remained undeveloped and uncultivated because of the very sandy topsoil making it useless for farming. Author Daniel Defoe described the area of Camberley as “Horrid and frightful to look upon and good for nothing, barren and sterile” Despite this damnation, a settlement was established around 1812 known as “New Town” and in 1831 was renamed to “Yorktown” after the Duke of York and Albany Prince Frederick
During the 19th century Camberley earned a reputation for having very healthy air, due to the vast numbers of Pine trees, this accolade boosted the population to 8400 by the end of the 19th century
In 1924 Camberley was home to the very first motorcycle scrambling event, which took place on the Old Dean common, just outside of Camberley. The even attracted of thousands of people and later developed into the sport we know today as Motocross.
Over the years Camberley has been home to a number of pop bands including 5ive, Bros and Five Star.
